In one family, people with the disease were half as likely to have ever smoked than family members without the disease and one third less likely to report high consumption of coffee.

Previous research had already shown the protective effect of these substances. The research of Dana B. Hancocket his colleagues, based on families, reducing the genetic and environmental factors that influence the development of the disease, thus putting more light on the action of the substances studied.

The associations between these substances and disease were studied in 356 people with the illness and 317 family members without the disease.

The biological mechanisms through which smoking and caffeine can act in people at risk for the disease are unknown. These results show the importance of interactions between genetics and environment in determining susceptibility to disease. Smoking and caffeine possibly modify genetic effects in families with Parkinson’s disease.
